La Ceja Sustainable Urban Mobility is a strategic urban design proposal developed for the national competition “Alternative Solutions to Vehicular Traffic in La Ceja of El Alto,”. Addressing one of Bolivia’s most complex urban nodes, the proposal sought to rethink mobility infrastructure through a human-centered and environmentally responsive approach.
Rather than prioritizing road expansion, the project proposed a multidimensional strategy focused on sustainable urban mobility, public space improvement, and green infrastructure. The intervention reorganized existing traffic corridors to prioritize public transport, walkability, cycling infrastructure, accessibility, and safer pedestrian connections while preserving and optimizing the existing urban fabric.
The proposal introduced dedicated Bus Rapid Transit lanes, wide inclusive sidewalks, landscaped public areas, cycle paths, and new pedestrian viaducts designed to reconnect fragmented urban spaces. Developed through a highly collaborative multidisciplinary process involving urban designers, engineers, mobility specialists, and environmental experts, the project emphasized realistic and scalable interventions capable of improving urban coexistence and environmental quality.
The proposal reflects an alternative vision for more accessible, resilient, and people-centered cities in Bolivia.
